There’s an anecdote that Heo yeop, the father of Heo Gyun and Heo Nanseolheon made the tofu out of sea water. As the taste of tofu with sea water was spread, people began to call it 'Chodang tofu’ because pseudonym of Heo yeop was Chodang.
As the Korean war broke out, village women spent nights making tofu, selling it in the market.
The Chodang tofu became famous because of its taste and nutritional value and many people in village began to make and sell tofu. It became the most famous tofu village in the whole country. Even today, the restaurant in the village is making the tofu early in the morning.
