Ojukheon is the birthplace of the Korean admired Neo-Confucian scholar, Yi I and his mother, Shin Saimdang.
‘Ojuk(烏竹)’ means a black bamboo and ‘heon(軒)’ means house.
The area has a climatically and geographically unique environment that black bamboos can grow.
The house, built by the black bamboo forest in the middle of Joseon Dynasty, is approximately 500 years old.
It was designated as the national treasure No. 165 in 1963, and remains intact and well preserved.
'The world’s first mother and son portraits on bills'

Her painting works have been handed down and praised greatly until now.

You can see Yi I’s statue as soon as stepping into the entrance.
According to a Korean saying, if you touch the statue’s index finger, you will do well in your study.
A figure on money shows greatness and pride of the nation, which is much meaningful.
It is great that you can see two historic people,
the mother and son at the same place who become figures on bills.
On the left is the living room where Yulgok Yi I studied,
and on the right is the room where Shin Saimdang gave birth to Yi I.
The day before Yi I was born, Shin Saimdang dreamed of a dragon, so the room was named 'Mongryongsil (夢龍室)' (room of dragon dream, ‘mong 夢’ is a dream, ‘ryoung 龍’ is a dragon and ‘sil 室’ is a room). The portrait of Shin Saimdang is displayed at Mongryongsil.
This is built to place the portrait of Yi I.
Across from Mongryongsil there is a 600 year-old crepe myrtle, the oldest living tree in Ojukheon.
Lee Young Ae, the actress starred in the Korean TV show 'Saimdang, Light’s Diary',
and her husband have come to this place and prayed in front of this tree to be given a wise daughter.
After a few months, she has given birth to the son and daughter twins.
After this story spreading, tourists have come often to this place.
There is a photo zone with the background of the 5,000 won monetary for visitors.
In the basement of Yulgok Humanism Educational Hall,
you can have 12 different experiences such as to take digital photographs,
to wear Korean traditional costumes, to be the figure of the monetary, etc.
