Ojukheon where Shin Saimdang and Lee Yulgok were born and raised and municipal museum exhibiting the relics and material of Gangneung’s history and culture were combined into
Ojukheon Gangneung municipal museum.
The name of Ojukheon means the black bamboo forests around the house are lush and it is the oldest resident building in Korea.
Shin Saimdang is a painter of the Joseon Dynasty. She gave birth to Lee Yulgok in Ojukheon. The room was named ‘Mong ryong chamber’ because her baby dream was about dragon. In Ojukheon, there are three facades and two sides including ‘Mong ryong chamber’ and it was designated as Treasure No.165.
All the buildings except for Ojukheon and Sarangchae were newly added in the later generations. Munsungsa, which kept Lee Yulgok’s portrait was built in 1976 during the purification business. Eojegak that kept inkstone was torn down but found its old form in 1987. Anchae was reconstructed in 1996 through the inspection. The municipal museum opened in 1992 as a name of local history museum plays a big role of developing and successing traditional culture by holding various humanities lectures and events. Also it collects, protects, studies, exhibits folk material and relics of rural area from Yeongdong region.
The oldest buildings and newly renovated buildings became the symbol of the completion of the Ojukheon＆Gangneung municipal museum. If can feel the attitude of life in the philosophy of Lee Yulgok and attention to nature in the picture of Shin Saimdang as you take a walk through the sacred places of art and scholarship where two talented people lived.
"Gangneung Art Creator Village"
The building that was abandoned as close-down school was rebuilt as a creative space for local artists. It was created with the purpose of providing creative and exhibition space to craftsmen in the region and increasing opportunities for citizens to experience crafts.
It is a complex cultural space equipped with 20 craft workshops, an oriental embroidery museum, and a craft experience room. It shares the joy of creative work with many people.
