Jumunjin in Gangneung used to be the place where squids are abundant,
because the environment is perfect for squid’s habitat.
Although the haul decreased dramatically due to various changes nowadays,
the squid is still one of specialties of Gangneung.
And recently new squid have showed up and been getting popularity there.
Masiwa Squid Bread
They are these squid shaped breads!
After watching that the cafes in Anmok Beach became popular tour spots of Gangneung
a local who created the squid bread, came up with the idea to make some tourism products using Gangneung’s squid.
Which means Masiwa squid bread is made by one local person with love of his hometown.
‘Masiwa’ means ‘delicious’ in Gangwon-do dialect.
The dough is mixed with powder and extract of Jumunjin squid
and the filling is made of chopped squid and sweet red bean paste.
The texture is soft, the red bean paste filling is very melty
and powdery, and chewing squid in the filling is fun.
Not added preservative,
so the shelf life is around 7 days at room temperature or around 15 days in the refrigerator.
They have another SNS popular item.
It is squid ink ice cream!
This black ice cream, made of squid ink, is put into the squid shaped cone,
filled with cereal in the tip of the bottom.
It is fun to eat to the end.
This black ice cream seems like to have a burn and bitter taste,
but literally it has a sweet and salty taste.
You can’t experience just to see and eat
but also to make and decorate the squid bread.
