the old Daegwallyeong road
Many philanthropic Gangneung people live beyond the steep hill.
Daegwallyeong is also called Daegullryeong because it is a hill that you roll over and over. Because it links Gangneung and Pyeongchang, you can look down on the city of Gangneung.
The old Daegwallyeong road is designated as a scenic spot in 2010 because of its well preserved natural landscape along the forest road connected from ‘Banjeong’ to Daegwallyeong museum.
The Old Daegwallyeong Road was the gateway and trade route from Gangneung to Yeongseo and Seoul. Classical scholars dreaming of greatness and merchants carrying heavy loads, crossed this path to Hanyang.
It is also the place where Gangneung Dano starts and where Shin Saimdang, missing her mother, walked with the young Yulgok holding hands. Songgang Jeongcheol wrote Gwandongbyeolgok and Kim Hong do, painted the picture on the middle of the road. There are many stories and histories.
People can walk easily along the Old Daegwallyeong Road, which is about 6km, because the mountain has gradual features. Many trees are combined with streams, small waterfalls, and rocks to create a classical grace and dignity. In particular, many hikers visit here to look at autumn foliage and winter snow flakes.
Walk, listening to the sound of clear water and birds chirping and relax at resting places along the way.
Looking over Daegwallyeong Museum lightly after walking the Old Daegwallyeong road is good enough. It is a rustic museum in the mountains where you can take a look at artifacts and old culture of Gangneung. Hong Gwi-suk who spent his whole life collecting and studying antiquities, opened the museum in 1993 and donated it to Gangneung-si in 2003 and it has since been operated as a municipal museum.
With Daegwallyeong as its background, it was made in the form of a dolmen and it looks like a stone that had rolled down from the mountain. Total 2000 artifacts from Bronze Age to modern times are displayed in six exhibition rooms and outdoors.
