Seongyojang, designated as the No. 5 National Important Cultural Property in 1965,
is a typical upper-class residence.
This beautiful 300 year-old traditional house consists of 99 rooms
and remains intact in harmony with the beautiful natural environment.
Still the descendants live in this house.
This structure, stretched out over the pond,
was built in 1816 where poets stayed and got inspired.
Some of their poems are hung on the wall of Hwallaejeong.
Currently, it is a popular place to shoot movies and TV dramas.
The 'haengrangchae', a row of rooms on the left side of the photo,
had been used as a residence for the owner's assistants and guest.
Now it is being used as an accommodation for tourists who wants to experience hanok.
There was a superstition that if a tree was planted on the yard,
as it grew the shape of the tree would make the family needy.
And the rooms would not take sunshine if it grew,
which is another reason why they planted only one tree never growing tall.
Seongyojang is surrounded by the pine trees.
The view from the woods is highly appreciated by the tourists.
People believe that clean air, good wind, and good soil made the beautiful woods.
Seonkyojang ranked 1st in the list of 'Top 10 Korean Traditional Houses of the 20th Century'
selected by KBS(Korea Broadcasting System) in 2000.
You can buy the authentic Seongyojang made gochujang(red chili paste)
and doenjang(soybean paste) here.
Cafe 'Leemong' is near the entrance of Seongyojang.
When you want to get some rest after looking around Seongyojang,
it will be a perfect place to seat with a cup of a tea, enjoying the view outside.
